The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
