An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
